Shari'a Law in Aceh

March 2, 2015 • 7:00 – 8:00 pm EST

The CSIS Sumitro Chair for Southeast Asia Studies is pleased to host a discussion with Ms. Kira Kay and Mr. Jason Maloney, directors of the Bureau for International Reporting, and Mr. Andreas Harsono, Indonesia researcher for Human Rights Watch. Ms. Kay, Mr. Maloney, and Mr. Harsono will discuss Sharia law in Indonesia’s Aceh region, and its recovery following the 2004 tsunami.

Kira Kay is the founder of the Bureau for International Reporting (BIR), a non-profit news organization dedicated to the coverage of “overlooked” foreign issues and regions. As the primary on-air correspondent for the BIR, she reports for PBS NewsHour and other PBS and cable outlets. In 2002, she was one of only a handful of U.S. journalists allowed to enter Aceh. Recent projects include an investigation into the insurgency in southern Thailand and repeated visits to Myanmar, where she obtained a rare journalist visa to report from Aung San Suu Kyi’s parliamentary campaign in March 2012.

Jason Maloney is BIR’s co-director and serves as producer, cameraman, and editor. His coverage of the civil war in Northern Uganda won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and received two Emmy nominations. Mr. Maloney also serves as clinical associate professor of journalism at New York University.

Andreas Harsono has covered Indonesia for Human Rights Watch since 2008. Prior to that, he helped found the Jakarta-based Institute for the Studies on Free Flow of Information in 1995, and the Pantau Foundation, a journalist training organization, in 2003. Mr. Harsono began his career as a reporter for the Bangkok-based Nation and the Kuala Lumpur-based Star newspapers, and he edited the Jakarta-based monthly journalism magazine Pantau.
