Stabilizing Russian-Ukrainian Gas Trade

The CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program and the Brookings Institution hosted a panel discussion on Russian-Ukrainian gas relations. Earlier this week, protracted negotiations finally yielded enough progress for gas to begin flowing again through the Ukrainian pipeline system.. Nonetheless, the underlying challenges to a stable Russian-Ukrainian gas relationship and a secure European gas supply remain. 

The meeting reviewed the current state of play and looks ahead at Ukrainian and international policy options that could bring greater stability to Ukraine’s energy sector, and greater predictability to European gas consumers.

In a brief opening comments, Edward Chow of the CSIS Energy Security Program addressed the gas cut-off situation from an industry perspective, Steven Pifer of the Brookings Institution will discuss the political dynamics, and Jonathan Elkind of Brookings Institution will describe possible actions to prevent future gas crises.
