The CSIS Africa Program hosts:

Towards the 7th Republic: Niger's Bumpy Road Ahead

With:

Sebastian Elischer
Research Fellow, German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Institute of African Affairs, Hamburg

Moderated By:

Jennifer Cooke
Director, CSIS Africa Program

One of the world's most underdeveloped countries, Niger has historically suffered from political instability, social inequalities, weak political institutions and rebellions in the North. A military coup earlier this year, along with the growing threat of radical Islam in the countryside, creates a challenging environment for the sustainability of future democratic rule. Dr. Elischer will offer his analysis of the current political context in Niger, based on field research in the country.
