Turkey-U.S. Relations in the 21st Century

Please join us for a meeting with Speaker Cemil Cicek as he discusses the continuing evolution of Turkey's important relationship with the United States. With its origins stretching back to the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the alliance between Ankara and Washington has survived and adapted with the massive changes in the international system, particularly after the end of the Cold War. However, the two allies still grapple with the challenge of maintaining the close relationship even as they protect their own interests.

Speaker Cicek has had a long and distinguished record in Turkish national politics which he first entered as a member of Turgut Ozal's Motherland Party in 1987. Prior to becoming Speaker in 2011, he served as Deputy Prime Minister (2007-11) and Minister of Justice (2002-07) in the Justice and Development Party governments headed by then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
