  • khalilzad.jpgU.S. ambassador and special envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad (l) discussed rebuilding efforts and the security and political environments in Afghanistan at a CSIS policy forum on April 5. Khalilzad praised the new Afghani constitution, touted the creation of roads and additional key infrastructure, and expressed concern over the Taliban fighters lurking along Pakistan's northwestern border. "We will not allow this problem to fester indefinitely," Khalilzad said. "We have told the Pakistani leadership that either they must solve this problem or we will have to do so ourselves. We prefer that Pakistan takes responsibility, and the Pakistani government agrees. However, one way or the other, this problem will have to be dealt with."
