U.S.-Russian Counterterrorism Cooperation

May 27, 2010 • 2:00 – 4:00 pm EDT

The CSIS Transnational Threats Project and Russia and Eurasia Program hosted a discussion on:

U.S.-Russian Counterterrorism Cooperation

Thursday, May 27, 10:00AM-12:00PM
B1 Conference Center, CSIS

The recent plot in Times Square and the gruesome attack on the Moscow Metro are fresh reminders that terrorism is a common threat to the security of the United States and Russian Federation.  As both states strive to protect themselves from this danger, they must work with a range of partners.  In today's globalized world, such international cooperation is a prerequisite for successfully containing transnational terrorist networks and other non-state actors that operate seamlessly across borders.

Russia's Special Presidential Counterterrorism Representative, Ambassador Anatoly Safonov, is at the forefront of fostering such international collaboration and will speak about Russia's efforts. The State Department's Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Ambassador-at-Large Daniel Benjamin, will also be present and has agreed to join Ambassador Safonov to field questions from the audience.

Moderators:

Arnaud de Borchgrave, Director, CSIS Transnational Threats Project

Andrew Kuchins, Director, CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program

Panelist:

Ambassador Anatoly Safonov, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cooperation in the fight against Terrorism and Transnational Organized Crime
