Web Event: A Dis-United or United States of Europe? (Williamsburg-CSIS Global Forum)

  • Monday - Tuesday, Mar 17 - 18, 2014
  • Please join us via webcast on March 17th and 18th for two dynamic sessions from the Williamsburg-CSIS Global Forum, LIVE from Colonial Williamsburg.  With the Eurozone crisis entering its fifth year, the sustainability of the EUs economic integration and monetary union is at the forefront of the European debate.  The opening panel of the Forum on Monday, March 17th will bring together three leading economists to examine the state of the euro zone today; the effectiveness of European policy interventions to stem the crisis; the future of Europes economic competitiveness; and the increasing accumulation of sovereign debt.  Is closer integration the best way for Europe to proceed or should Europe consider an alternative construct in light of the diversity of euro zone economies?

While global attention has focused on European economies, the principal challenge of creating a United States of Europe is largely political.  On March 18th, at a time when discussion of a possible UK referendum on EU membership is dominating headlines, the Williamsburg-CSIS Global Forum will welcome the Rt. Hon. Liam Fox, Former UK Defense Minister and Member of Parliament, and Mr. Jörg Asmussen, German Deputy Minister of Labor and a former member of the European Central Banks executive board for a lively, Oxford Union-style debate on the future prospects of a United States of Europe. Mr. Asmussen will argue in support of an ever closer European Union and Mr. Fox will argue against greater European integration.  Acclaimed columnist Roger Cohen of the New York Times will moderate the debate.
