  • In early 2005, Arturo Porzecanski ended three decades of work as an international economist on Wall Street, where he rose to become chief economist for emerging markets at several financial institutions, the latest being ABN AMRO. He has since been devoted to teaching and research in international economics and finance and is currently a professor, with the academic title of distinguished economist in residence, at American University in Washington, D.C. He taught previously at Columbia University, New York University, and Williams College. One of the pioneers of emerging-markets research on Wall Street, Dr. Porzecanski is cited frequently in leading newspapers and is interviewed by CNN, the BBC, Reuters, and Bloomberg and on radio stations in the Americas and Europe. Prior to joining ABN AMRO in July 2000, he served for six years as chief economist for the Americas at ING Barings. Earlier, he was chief emerging-markets economist at Kidder, Peabody & Co. (1992–1993); chief economist at Republic National Bank of New York (1989–1992); senior economist at J.P. Morgan (1977–1989); research economist at the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies in Mexico City (1975–1976); and visiting economist at the International Monetary Fund (1973). Born and raised in Montevideo, Uruguay, Dr. Porzecanski majored in economics at Whittier College in California and then earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
