Craig CohenVice President for Research and Programs
Craig Cohen is vice president for research and programs at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a bipartisan think tank in Washington, D.C. In this role, he is the principal adviser to the CSIS president and CEO on the Center’s research and programmatic agenda, helping to manage more than 40 substantive programs and recruit new senior scholars to CSIS. He recently served as editor for two CSIS publications: Capacity and Resolve, on foreign assessments of U.S. power, sponsored by the National Intelligence Council; and Global Forecast 2011, on the top international security challenges of the current era.
Previously, Mr. Cohen served as deputy chief of staff and fellow at CSIS, where he codirected and coauthored the report of its Commission on Smart Power, A Smarter, More Secure America (CSIS, 2007), chaired by Joseph Nye and Richard Armitage, looking at ways to draw on the full strength of the United States and its partners to enhance security and prosperity. He is author or coauthor of Surveying the Civilian Reform Landscape (Stanley Foundation, 2008); A Perilous Course: U.S. Strategy and Assistance to Pakistan (CSIS, 2007); “When $10 Billion Isn’t Enough,” on U.S. aid to Pakistan (Washington Quarterly, 2007); and Measuring Progress in Reconstruction and Stabilization Operations (U.S. Institute of Peace, 2006). Mr. Cohen served as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School in 2006. Prior to joining CSIS, he worked with the United Nations and nongovernmental organizations in Rwanda, Azerbaijan, Malawi, and the former Yugoslavia. He received a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and an undergraduate degree from Duke University.
