Dolores Wharton is a retired corporate director and foundation executive. She is the former chairman and chief executive officer of the Fund for Corporate Initiatives, Inc., a nonprofit organization devoted to strengthening the role of minorities and women in the corporate world. She is currently a trustee of CSIS and New York City Center. In 1976, Mrs. Wharton was elected the first woman and first African-American to the board of the Phillips Petroleum Company and served for 18 years until her resignation in 1993. She also pioneered as a former director of the Kellogg Company for 22 years and Gannett Co., Inc. Among her other prior boards memberships are National Public Radio; COMSAT Corporation; Michigan Bell Telephone Company; New York Telephone Company; Michigan National Bank; Key Bank, Albany; and Capital Bank & Trust Company, Albany (founding member). In the area of the arts, Mrs. Wharton was appointed by President Gerald R. Ford to the National Council on the Arts of the National Endowment for the Arts (1974–1980). She also was a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art (1977–1987) and a director of the Albany Institute of History and Art (1980–1987). She has been a trustee of the Corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1987–1994), Asia Society (1982–1987), China Medical Board (1977–1981), Albany Law School, Ethics Resource Center, Aspen Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY), Women’s Economic Round Table, Duke Ellington Memorial Fund, Inc., and the Board of Visitors, Tulane University. Mrs. Wharton is the former vice chair of the Off the Record lecture series for the Foreign Policy Association. She holds a B.A. degree in fine arts from Chicago State University and nine honorary doctors of humane letters from Central Michigan University, College of St. Rose, Wilberforce University, State University of New York, Le Moyne College, Marymount College, Michigan State University, Hartwick College, and Chicago State University.
