  • Gerrit W. Gong is a senior associate at CSIS in Washington, D.C., and assistant to the president at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Dr. Gong holds Ph.D. and masters of philosophy degrees in international relations from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes scholar. He has researched and taught at Oxford, Johns Hopkins (School of Advanced International Studies), Georgetown, and Brigham Young Universities. Dr. Gong has served on the U.S. Department of Education’s National Advisory Committee for Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI), as well as for 20 years at the U.S. Department of State and at CSIS as Freeman Chair in China Studies and Asia director. He has served as personal adviser to the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court during his official China visit, as executive officer for the China visit of President George H.W. Bush, and as assistant to two U.S. ambassadors at the U.S. embassy in Beijing, People’s Republic of China. Dr. Gong writes, lectures, and consults on East Asian trends and issues in North America, Asia, and Europe.
