At CSIS, J. Stephen Morrison is director of the Global Health Policy Center and a senior vice president. With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, other foundation and corporate contributors, the Center advances a long-term strategic U.S. approach to global health, cultivates new global health champions, enriches our understanding of the security and foreign policy dimensions of global health, and links Washington-based work to emerging policy expertise in key developing and middle-income countries. In February of this year, the Center published Global Health Policy in the Second Obama Term, a collection of expert assessments of the first Obama term’s performance in several key sectors, including recommendations for priorities in the second term.
Dr. Morrison writes widely, testifies before Congress, has directed several high-level task forces and commissions, and is a frequent contributor in major media on U.S. foreign policy, global health, Africa, and foreign assistance. He served for 7 years in the Clinton administration, 4 years as committee staff in the House of Representatives, and taught for 12 years as an adjunct professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin and is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale College.
