Nicole Goldin

  • Nicole Goldin is a leading economist and expert on inclusive global development and international affairs, especially well-known for her pioneering work and insights on youth, young women, and girls. She was founding director of the Youth, Prosperity, and Security Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in partnership with the International Youth Foundation (IYF), where she led the creation of the acclaimed Global Youth Wellbeing Index. Currently, she is a consulting lead economist to the World Bank and Solutions for Youth Employment Coalition, a professorial lecturer at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, and a nonresident senior associate at CSIS. Through her boutique consulting practice, NRG Advisory, she provides strategic, policy, and engagement advice and analysis to private, public, and civil society organizations on international issues. Dr. Goldin served in senior advisory positions in the Obama administration at the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and received multiple commendations for her work. She was a driving force behind the State Department Youth Task Force and policy framework, the President’s Young African Leaders Initiative, and was principal architect of USAID’s first-ever Policy on Youth In Development. She was also instrumental in policy initiatives concerning conflict minerals, economic partnerships for growth, urbanization, and empowering girls. An established thought leader, dynamic communicator, and writer, Dr. Goldin is a sought-after blogger, public speaker, and facilitator. Her commentaries and analyses have been featured in many fora including CNN, Huffington Post, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Guardian, Devex, U.S. News, Voice of America, WTOP, and she has appeared before many large and small audiences at CSIS and beyond, including the United Nations, World Affairs Councils, and Concordia Summit.

    Throughout her career, Dr. Goldin has worked within, across, and to lead collaborations among public, corporate, finance, philanthropic, and nonprofit sector organizations, including Hilton Worldwide, Peace Dividend Trust/Building Markets, Clinton Global Initiative, Gerson Lehrman Group, Chemonics, and IFES on economic growth, education, democracy and governance, youth, urbanization, gender, peacebuilding, and social innovation policy and programs. She sits on the Board of Directors of Educate! and the Advisory Board for She’s the First, and she is a former board director to the Society for International Development–Washington Chapter. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, an M.Sc. in development from the London School of Economics, an M.A. in international political economy from American University, and a B.A. in East Asian studies from Union College.
