Phillip Nieburg

Phillip Nieburg, M.D., M.P.H., is a pediatrician, also trained in infectious diseases and preventive medicine, who has worked in public health since 1977. Dr. Nieburg received his undergraduate and M.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University and completed his pediatric and infectious disease training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the State University of New York’s Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He also holds a master of public health degree from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Nieburg began his U.S. Public Health Service career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1977 and remained there until 2003, serving for several years as the first associate director for science at the National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention. Much of his CDC work involved global health issues such famine and refugees, child nutrition, training of epidemiologists in developing countries, child nutrition, TB and HIV/AIDS. He has been a senior associate at CSIS since 2003, first with its HIV/AIDS Task Force (2003–2008) and currently with its Global Health Policy Center.
