Yongsoo Hwang

  • Yongsoo Hwang is a visiting fellow with the CSIS Proliferation Prevention Program, investigating spent nuclear fuel and nuclear nonproliferation issues. He is principal researcher and project manager at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) in Daejeon, South Korea. At KAERI, he has also served as lab director and head for safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal for spent nuclear fuel and low- and intermediate-level waste; nuclear fuel cycle strategy development; mid- and long-term national policy over spent nuclear fuel management; East Asian nuclear cooperation; and nonproliferation. Dr. Hwang was a member of the Korean Public and Stakeholder Engagement (PSE) team. He also served as a member of the advisory group at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2004–2005 multilateral nuclear approach, publishing IAEA INFCIRC 680. Dr. Hwang holds a B.S. in nuclear engineering from Seoul National University in South Korea and an M.S. and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.
