Portugal is the first European nation to "discover" the island of Taiwan, some time around 1544. In 1590, a Dutch navigator on a passing Portuguese ship, Jan Huygen van Linschoton, exclaimed "Ilha Formosa" (beautiful island)-a name that stuck for nearly four centuries.
