In 1874, the Japanese Empire sends fleets on a punitive mission to Mudan to force the Qing Court to compensate and apologize to them for the murder of more than 60 of their shipwrecked seamen there three years before. Although this prompts China to institute modernization programs, the incident sets the stage for Japan's annexation of Taiwan in 1895.
