On November 10, 2001, the PRC joins the World Trade Organization (WTO) after 15 years of negotiation. Taiwan, whose own application had been delayed until China's accession, joins a day later as a separate customs union under the name "Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu," or "Chinese Taipei."
