In the fifth Legislative Yuan elections, the DPP obtains 87 out of a total of 225 seats, replacing the KMT as the largest party in the legislature. The KMT wins 68 seats, and the People First Party comes in third with 46 seats. The KMT, PFP, and the New Party form a "pan-blue" coalition, however, and muster a slim majority over the "pan-green" coalition of the DPP and the Taiwan Solidarity Union.
