President Chen Shui-bian and Vice President Annette Lu survive an apparent assassination attempt on the eve of the presidential election. They narrowly win a second term in office the next day on March 20, defeating the pan-blue candidates Lien Chan and James Soong by only 29,500 votes. Chen's referendum fails to reach the participation threshold of 50 percent of registered voters; of the 45 percent who voted on the referendum, over 91 percent of valid votes are in favor of both questions.
