During the Franco-Qing War (1884-1885) fought over the issue of Vietnamese sovereignty, French forces attack regions of Taiwan to secure as a source of future revenue. At the war's conclusion, the Empress Dowager of the Qing Court declares Taiwan a province independent of Fujian and a "protector of the seven coastal provinces" of the Qing Dynasty.
