The New European Democracies Project seeks to help the states of Central and Eastern Europe achieve their economic potential and strengthen their relations with the Unites States and the region.

The North Caucasus project seeks to broaden international attention to and understanding of the continued violence, increasing human rights abuses, and growing instability in the republics of the North Caucasus.

Together with colleagues from the Eurasia Foundation and the New Eurasia Foundation, the CSIS Human Rights and Security Initiative convened a meeting of civil society leaders from the United States and Russia in Moscow to explore new approaches to a more robust U.S.-Russian civil society relationship.

The Russia and Eurasia Program offers analysis of rapid economic change in Russia and the consequences for U.S. policy.

CSIS, in partnership with the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies, has entered into a five-year collaborative research project to examine and analyze the growing geopolitical strategic importance of the High North region.

Current projects on the Eastern and Central European region include: U.S.-EU Partnership Committee for Ukraine, the Transatlantic Policy Forum, and the U.S.-Kazakhstan OSCE Task Force.

As the U.S. presence in Afghanistan increases, its demand for non-military supplies in 2010-2011 will be 200-300% more than the 2008 baseline.  To accommodate this increase and address ongoing concerns with Pakistani supply lines, U.S. planners have opened the Northern Distribution Network (NDN), a series of commercially-based logistical arrangements connecting Baltic and Caspian ports with Afghanistan via Russia, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
