Today, SpaceX successfully tested the vehicle that may someday take American astronauts to space. Falcon 9 launched from Cape Canaveral at 10:43 this morning, and about 13 minutes later, the first Dragon capsule began on-orbit operations. On Tuesday, COPUOS began consideration of three agenda items – space and society, space and water, and space and climate change. The space and society agenda item was particularly focused on space education, as member States detailed their efforts highlight the importance of space activities and attract young people to the space sector. The next two agenda items focused on application of space technologies.

On Monday morning, discussion continued on open agenda items from the previous week. One item, briefly discussed Friday, but in greater detail Monday, was spin-off benefits of space technology.

On Friday, the agenda items on general exchange of views and ways and means of preserving peace continued. The ways and means discussion concluded. The next agenda item discussed was implementation of the recommendations of UNISPACE III.

The general exchange of views at COPUOS continued on Thursday, June 10th. Most agenda items at COPUOS are discussed over several days, with a certain portion of each session devoted to an agenda item. The schedule for the day is available every morning in a journal, which also briefly lists the previous day’s activities.

The 53rd meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) is currently taking place in Vienna, Austria, from 9-18 June. CSIS is honored to be a part of the US delegation to COPUOS.
