Richard Nixon’s visit to China in 1972 was a seismic event in world history. China’s political, economic and military emergence owes much to the policy set in motion that chilly February in Beijing, to bring China into the global order of which the United States has been the chief architect and guarantor. The active bridging of the divide between the world’s most powerful and populous societies and the resulting changes that it has wrought have, in many respects, been the enduring story of our age.
