Obama Calls for Greater Afghan Commitment from Europe.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama called on European allies to commit more resources to the war in Afghanistan in a speech stressing the shared "burdens of global citizenship" that bind the U.S. and Europe.
"A change of leadership in Washington will not lift this burden," Obama said in the speech in Berlin today. "In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be required to do more, not less. Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the one way, the only way, to protect our common security and advance our common humanity." [...]
Obama isn't likely to "alter the basic thrust of German presence in Afghanistan," said Reginald Dale, a senior fellow in the Europe Program at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.
