CSIS Korea Chair Welcomes New Distinguished Senior Associates

WASHINGTON, April 22, 2014 – The Office of the Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies is delighted to announce two new non-resident Distinguished Senior Associates for 2014, General (Ret, ROK Army) Jung, Seung Jo and Mr. Evan Ramstad.

Their extensive knowledge and experience on South Korea’s military and business matters, respectively, come at the most opportune time and will be an invaluable resource for the research activities at the Office of the Korea Chair and CSIS.

Seung Jo JUNG, Former Chairman of the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff

General (Ret, ROK Army) Seung Jo Jung served a distinguished career as one of Korea’s leading military figures. He served as the 37th Chairman of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Jung’s command positions include: Deputy Commander and Ground Component Commander, Combined Forces Command; Commander, 1st Army; Superintendent, Republic of Korea Military Academy; Commander, 2nd Corps; Director of the Policy Planning Bureau, Ministry of National Defense; Director of Civil and Psychological Operations, Joint Chiefs of Staff; Commanding General, Peace & Reconstruction Division (Zaytun), Iraq; Commander, 1st Infantry Division; Chief of Operations, 3rd Army; and Deputy C5, Combined Forces Command. General Jung is a graduate of the Republic of Korea Military Academy, and holds an M.S. in management from Yonsei University. He also attended the Republic of Korea Army Staff College and the United States Army War College.

Evan Ramstad, Digital Business Editor, Minneapolis Star Tribune

Mr. Evan Ramstad, served as one of the leading analysts of the economic and business scene in Korea for the Wall Street Journal. A journalist since 1987, he is an editor on the business news desk of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Before that, he was Korea chief correspondent of The Wall Street Journal from 2006 to 2013. During that time, he covered the full range of South Korea’s alliance, trade, security, business, social, and political issues. He made numerous appearances in South Korean and international media during that time and gave lectures to university and civic groups around the country. Mr. Ramstad previously wrote for the Journal in Hong Kong and Dallas and for the Associated Press in Dallas, Minneapolis, Washington and New York. He grew up in Grinnell, Iowa, where his first job was at the town radio station and was a licensed FCC radio operator before the industry was deregulated. He has a B.A in political science and journalism from Trinity University, San Antonio.
