Turkey: Obama's Muslim Outreach.

President Barack Obama pitched himself against his recently won European friends on Monday as he waded into the debate on Turkey's European Union membership. Obama told the Turkish parliament that the U.S. "strongly" supported the country's bid to join the European Union. Just the day before, France's Nicholas Sarkozy had shot down Obama's appeal to the E.U., saying it was up to member nations to decide. [. . .]

Still, it is no coincidence that Obama has chosen Turkey for his second formal bilateral state visit, after Canada, says Aliriza Bulent, head of the Turkey program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (the others such as with the British Prime Minister were all linked to the G-20 summit in London).
