Defense Drawdown Working Group

Although the initial round of spending cuts mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011 will not require a fundamental change in the nation’s defense strategy, as articulated in the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review, cuts substantially beyond this level will likely force DoD to examine the growing disconnect between strategy and resources.  To help facilitate the long-range planning needed to successfully address this misalignment, the Defense Drawdown Working Group, co-chaired by senior advisers Clark Murdock and G. Kim Wincup, will convene approximately 20 former DoD officials and leading defense analysts on a monthly basis to discuss both the managerial challenges associated with successive drawdowns and the strategic, force posture, and resource implications of deeper reductions. 

The group's work will culminate in a final report outlining consensus recommendations for strategic prioritization in the face of a 25-35% reduction in the defense budget.
