Rising U.S. Energy Interests

Rising U.S. Energy Interests: The CSIS Africa Program examines political and humanitarian developments in West African oil-exporting states and the region's geostrategic importance as a major supplier of U.S. oil and an emerging market for natural gas. The Africa Program closely monitors current political developments in the Niger Delta and has hosted several sessions on the prospects for peace and development in the region, as well as maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. Our experts continue to work to determine how U.S. policy can best promote economic reform, good governance, improved respect for human rights, environmental stewardship, and support for democratization while reconciling these goals with rising U.S. energy and security interests in the region.
