June 2006 Beijing Conference
To further explore views in the United States and China on U.S. and Chinese nuclear weapons policies and their evolution, CSIS, in partnership with the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), The RAND Corporation, and China Foundation for International and Strategic Studies (CFISS) co-hosted a conference on June 20-21, 2006 in Beijing, China. The "Track 1.5" conference brought together a group of U.S. and Chinese experts and former and current government and military officials to exchange views on issues including developments in the global nuclear landscape since the end of the Cold War; U.S. and Chinese strategic force modernization; evolution of thinking regarding declaratory policies; nuclear risks in a potential crisis in Taiwan; how to avoid greater competition in the nuclear realm that could undermine the political relationship; and nuclear power and WMD non-proliferation.
