2015 Events

March 17: 40th Anniversary Celebration of Pacific Forum and Annual Board of Governors' Dinner Fundraiser. Join us at the beachfront Sheraton Waikiki as we celebrate 40 years of Pacific Forum. The featured dinner speaker will be Richard Armitage. Sponsors will be invited to a lunch featuring Dr. Joseph Nye and a breakfast briefing with Dr. John Hamre. Information on individual tickets and table sponsorships, as well as information on hotel and travel packages for this event, will be announced in Summer 2014.

Jan. 6: Honolulu International Forum featuring Ralph Cossa and Brad Glosserman
Annual Asia overview featuring Ralph Cossa, president of Pacific Forum CSIS, and Brad Glosserman, executive director.

Jan. 13-22: Japan Foundation Kakehashi Young Leaders Delegation (Tokyo, Hiroshima)
A special delegation of 11 Young Leaders traveled as guests of the Japanese Government to visit institutions and organizations to expand knowledge of Japanese security issues and to promote a deeper understanding of Japan.

Jan. 24: Honolulu International Forum featuring Hon. Chung Mong Joon
The Hon. Chung Mong Joon shared his views on the ROK-US alliance and its problems and prospects.

Feb 3: Strategic Studies Center Delegation visit to Pacific Forum
The SSC Delegation visited Pacific Forum to ehance the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the SSC and  its collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region. 

Feb. 5: Honolulu International Forum featuring Manny Menendez
Manny Menendez gave an interactive briefing on "China 2014 - Where China is now, where China is headed and implications for Hawaii."

Feb. 7-8: US/UK-Myanmar Dialogue (Yangon)
The first US/UK-Myanmar dialogue on nonproliferation. 

Feb. 14: Honolulu International Forum featuring David Lampton
Professor David Lampton shared his views on Chinese Foreign Policy under President Xi Jinping.

Feb. 25: Pacific Forum CSIS Board of Governors Meeting and Fundraising Dinner
The Board of Governors dinner was a fundraiser for the Young Leaders Program, Pacific Forum's signature next-generation leadership effort that will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2014. The keynote speaker was Irene Hirano Inouye.

March 4-5: Maritime Security Workshop on Maritime Environmental Protection Cooperation (Honolulu) [+Young Leaders Program]
A workshop on the preparedness and response to pollution incidents involving hazardous and noxious substances.

March 21: US-Japan Public Seminar (Washington, DC)
A public seminar on US-Japan relations, including a keynote speech and a public panel session featuring Richard Armitage, Akio Takahara, Joseph Nye, and Yukio Okamoto.

March 21-22: US-Japan Security Seminar (Washington, DC) [+Young Leaders Program]
MoFA-sponsored, JIIA co-hosted seminar brings together top-level scholars and officials from the US and Japan to discuss bilateral issues of concern.

March 23-25: Sasakawa Peace Foundation Fellowship Program (Washington, DC) [Young Leaders only Program]
Sasakawa Peace Foundation Fellows present their research to seniors and Young Leaders.

March 31: Honolulu International Forum featuring Kent Kedl (Honolulu)
Mr. Kent Kedl, managing director for Great China and North Asia for Control Risks, delivered a talk on "Chickens and Monkeys: Challenges for foreign companies in China."

April 1: Roundtable with China Institute of International Studies Delegation (Honolulu)
A special delegation from CIIS met with Pacific Forum senior staff, research fellows to discuss US-China security issues.

April 14: Honolulu International Forum discussing Taiwan and Ma Ying-jeou, President of the Republic of China (Honolulu)
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Honolulu sponsored a luncheon special discussion on ROC President Ma's April 9th broadcast at CSIS in Washington, DC.

April 16: Honolulu International Forum featuring Satu Limaye (Honolulu)
 Dr. Satu Limaye, director of the East-West Center, delivered a talk on "A Washington perspective of US-Asia relations prior to President Obama's April 2014 visit."
 
May 2: Honolulu International Forum featuring Ralph Cossa, Brad Glosserman, and Yang Yujie (Honolulu)
Pacific Forum President Ralph Cossa, Executive Director Brad Glosserman, and resident WSD-Handa fellow and PLA Senior Colonel Yang Yujie gave a presentation on "Assessing Obama's Asia Tour," and  provided a timely US and Chinese perspective on President Obama's current trip throughout the region.

May 6-8: 21st Century Pacific Island Security Workshop (Honolulu) [+Young Leaders Program]
A workshop to discuss the significance of Pacific Island Security to the United States in the 21st century.

May 27: Bilateral USCSCAP and CSCAP Philippines Workshop on UNCLOS and Maritime Security in East Asia (Manila)
A meeting to discuss the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) and Maritime Security in East Asia. The discussions focused on the role of UNCLOS in facilitating dispute settlement and promoting cooperation through regional organizations.

June 8-10: 8th US-China Strategic Dialogue: "Common Strategic Interests & Building Strategic Stability" (Ko Olina, Oahu) [+Young Leaders Program]
The eighth annual meeting of the US-China Strategic Dialogue is centered on the themes: "Common Strategic Interests and Building Strategic Stability."

June 11: Honolulu International Forum featuring Amb. Karl Eikenberry (Honolulu)
Ambassador Eikenberry discussed "China's Grand Strategy and America's Response."

June 26-27: US-China Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security Dialogue (Washington, DC)
This dialogue built upon the existing body of work on the topic and examine how the US and China perceive, assess, and approach nonproliferation and nuclear security challenges in order to enhance cooperation between the two, namely in Northeast and Southeast Asia. The workshop aimed to identify similiarities and differences between the US and China and lays the foundations for cooperation.

June 30: Roundtable meeting featuring Consul General Cassie Doyle, and Rear Admiral Bill Truelove (Honolulu)
Remarks by CG Cassie Doyle on Canada-Hawaii and Canada-US relations, as well as Canada's interests in the Asia-Pacific region. RADM Bill Truelove, commander of Maritime Forces Pacific for the Royal Canadian Navy, shared his thoughts on Canadian military involvement in the region.

July 1: Special event featuring General Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Honolulu)
General Dempsey delivered a policy speech, titled "US Military Power in a Complex World."

July 7: 18th Meeting of the CSCAP Study Group on Countering the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Asia Pacific (Tokyo) [+Young Leaders Program]
This meeting will focus on the recent developments in nonproliferation and disarmament; the Nuclear Security Summit process; UN Security Council Resolution 1540; and the strategic trade controls and Proliferation Security Initiative.

July 21-22: US-ROK Strategic Dialogue (Maui) [+Young Leaders Program]
DTRA-sponsored dialogue focused on the US commitment to extended deterrence for South Korea and strategic relations in the Asia-Pacific region.

March 13-15: Sasakawa Peace Foundation Fellowship Program Conference (San Francisco) [Young Leaders only Program]

April 4: Honolulu International Forum featuring Dr. Brenda Lei Foster*
Dr. Foster, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, spoke about her experiences in China.

April 8: Timor-Leste: A New Decade, a New Government, a New Beginning featuring Ambassador Judith Ryan Fergin
US Ambassador to Timor-Leste Judith Ryan Fergin shared her thoughts on the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

April 22-25: WSD-Handa Young Leaders Forum (Geneva, Zurich) [Young Leaders only Program]
Young Leaders, with the generous financial support of both WSD-Handa and the International Relations and Security Network (ISN), participated in the International Security Forum in Geneva that brings together some 500 international security decision makers. Then, Young Leaders travelled to Zurich to participate in special briefing sessions at the International Relations and Security Network within the Swiss Institute of Technology.

May 1: Honolulu International Forum featuring The Honorable Colleen Hanabusa*
US Representative Colleen Hanabusa shared her views on current perspectives and trends in the Washington policymaking community regarding US foreign policy, security, and economic engagement in Asia.

May 9-10: Seventh Meeting of ARF Experts and Eminent Persons Group
Topics discussed at this meeting included preventive diplomacy, the future direction of the ARF, and the future work and importance of the ARF EEP's for ARF consideration and adoption.

May 10: Regional Reactions to the US Pivot to Asia featuring Ralph Cossa, Tan Sri Mohammed Jawhar Hassan, Dr. Xuechung Liu, and Paul Evans
This open-to-the-public event, at the conclusion of the ASEAN Regional Forum's Experts and Eminent Persons Group meeting in Honolulu, features four speakers discussed the US pivot to Asia.

May 14: Honolulu International Forum featuring Torkel Patterson*
Torkel Patterson, managing director of Group Pacific Inc, president of US-Japan MAGLEV, and senior adviser to the US-Japan High Speed Rail, spoke on "Japan and the emerging security dynamic in Northeast Asia."

May 23: Honolulu International Forum featuring Spencer Kim*
Spencer Kim, founder of the Pacific Century Institute, spoke on "The North Korea Issue: An Expanded Perspective on Cutting the Gordian Knot."

June 1-4: CSCAP WMD Study Group (Manila, Philippines) [+Young Leaders Program]
Study group examined nonproliferation and disarmament issues in the Asia-Pacific; held in conjunction with the ASEAN Regional Forum Inter-sessional Meeting on Nonproliferation and Disarmament (ARF ISM/NPD).

July 1: Honolulu International Forum featuring The Honorable Tulsi Gabbard*
US Representative Tulsi Gabbard shared her views and current perspectives on the Washington foreign policy and security communities.

July 15: France, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia featuring Dr. Pierre Journoud
Dr. Pierre Journoud, research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Research, Military Academy in Paris, shared his views on "France, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia Since 1954." This open-to-the-public discussion is cosponsored by both Pacific Forum CSIS and Hawaii Pacific University.

July 17: Honolulu International Forum featuring Mihoko Matsubara*
Mihoko Matsubara, a cybersecurity analyst, former Japanese Ministry of Defense official, and the 2011-2012 resident Japanese Sasakawa Peace Foundation Fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS, shared her views on Japan-US cybersecurity cooperation.

July 23: Honolulu International Forum featuring Paula Helfrich*
Paula Helfrich, the Myanmar Country Manager with The Charlton Group, shared her views on the dramatic changes currently underway in Myanmar, to include a frank assessment of the serious challenges ahead and the US role in this process.

July 30: Honolulu International Forum featuring Xinbo Wu*
Dr. Wu Xinbo shared his views on the road ahead for Chinese President Xi Jinping's foreign policy and US-China relation. Dr. Wu is professor and executive dean of the Insitute of International Studies, and director of the Center for American Studies, at Fudan University in Shanghai.

Aug. 9: Honolulu International Forum featuring Ambassador Kristie Kenney*
Kristie Kenney, US Ambassador to Thailand, shared her personal views on the state of Thai-US relations.

Aug. 14: Honolulu International Forum featuring Sheila Smith*
Sheila Smith, a senior fellow for Japan Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, shared her views on the US-Japan alliance.

Aug. 25-29: Asia-Pacific Security Forum (Taipei, Tainan) [+Young Leaders Program]
Young Leaders, with the financial support of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, attended the annual Asia-Pacific Security Forum dialogue with representatives from Taiwan, European Union, Philippines, and the United States to discuss regional security issues. After the conference concluded, the Young Leaders travelled to Tainan, ROC to participate in cultural activities sponsored by the 21st Century Foundation.

Aug. 27-29: Workshop on Strategic Trade Controls (Taiwan)
Export control workshop on "Strategic Trade Controls." This meeting examined efforts to improve the control of trade in weapons of mass destruction (WMD)-related goods, share best practices in export control implementation, and explore opportunities for cooperation among APEC member economies to improve coordination in preventing illicit trade of these strategic goods.

Sept. 2-3: US-ROK-JPN Extended Deterrence Trilateral (Seoul) [+Young Leaders Program]
This meeting brought together a small, select group of experts and officials in their personal capacities to share perspectives on trilateral cooperation and extended deterrence issues.

Sept. 5-8: WSD-Handa Forum with Rt. Hon. Tony Blair (Tokyo) [+Young Leaders Program]
Global Opinions Leaders' Summit themed around "Considering Peace" lessons from Northern Ireland for the Middle East with special guest speaker Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, former UK prime minister. Following the conference, YLs took a guided bus tour and Shinkansen ride to Mount Fuji and a cruise on Lake Ashi.

Sept. 9: Honolulu International Forum featuring DAS Frank Rose*
Mr. Frank Rose, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Space and Defense Policy, shared his views on Ballistic Missile Defense and Space Policy.

Oct. 1: Honolulu International Forum featuring Admiral Cecil Haney*
Admiral Cecil Haney shared his views on the evolving Asia-Pacific maritime domain, the role of US Pacific Fleet in the Indo-Pacific region, the "Rebalance", and fiscal realities facing the US Navy.

Oct. 11: Honolulu International Forum featuring Ambassador Joao Vale de Almeida*
Ambassador Joao Vale de Almeida, the EU Ambassador to the United States, shared his views on the two regional trade talks (the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) the US is engaged in and their impact on one another and the global trade system.

Oct. 28: CHINA Town Hall meeting in Honolulu
Pacific Forum CSIS, in conjunction with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, will host Honolulu's CHINA Town Hall meeting. Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will be the featured speaker and appear via livestream. Pacific Forum CSIS Executive Director Brad Glosserman will be the local speaker. The event is free and open to the public, additional details will be forthcoming. The event is sponsored by the National Committee on US-China Relations.

Nov. 4-5: US-China Dialogue on Strategic Nuclear Dynamics (Beijing) [+Young Leaders Program]
Annual dialogue with senior experts from the US and China.

Nov. 11-12: Nuclear Energy Experts Group Meeting (Da Lat, Vietnam)

Nov. 15-16: WSD-Handa Forum with President Bill Clinton (Tokyo) [+Young Leaders only Program]
The next Global Opinions Leaders' Summit will feature former US President Bill Clinton.
