Liberia is one of Africa's two oldest independent states, yet it is regarded by many of its 1.7 million inhabitants as a recently liberated new nation. The coup of April 12, 1980-in which a group of 17 enlisted men under the leadership of Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe assassinated President William R. Tolbert, Jr. and many of his political associates-terminated 133 years of a form of colonial domination not unlike that experienced by Africans elsewhere on the continent.
