China Economic Brief: Issues for the New Administration and Congress

  • Feb 1, 2001

In the unfolding of the twenty-first century, no relationship will be more important than that between the United States and China. Accordingly, this China Economic Brief seeks to provide useful information and informed perspectives for members of the 107th Congress, including freshmen members, and the new administration regarding U.S.-China economic, financial, and institutional issues that will influence U.S. relations with and policies for China. Many of these issues also have bearing on broader political and security considerations that are not specifically discussed in this brief.

This brief puts Sino-U.S. economic relations in global perspective (Nicholas Lardy), in international system perspective (Margaret Pearson), in the perspective of China’s dynamic domestic changes (Pieter Bottelier on economics and Minxin Pei on politics), and in the perspective of U.S. executive and congressional issues and policy agenda (Gerrit Gong).
