The visit of Chinese leader Hu Jintao to Washington this week – his first to the White House since becoming China’s top leader more than three years ago – culminates a year of both intensified bilateral relations and intensified bilateral strains. The period 2005-2006 will be remembered as a time when the United States began to truly recognize the full extent of the complexities, interdependencies, problems and possibilities in relations with China.
