Middle East Notes and Comment: Covering a Coup

When millions flooded into Egypt’s streets in 2011 and the president was removed, few doubted that the country had undergone a revolution. When millions flooded the streets again in 2013 and the president was removed, observers were quick to dub it a “coup.” The difference in many ways was the different television coverage the two episodes received. It tells us a great deal about the role of traditional media in the Arab world, and it helps explain the polarization that has ensued.
