Secretary Rice in Ankara: Mission Impossible?
-
Oct 31, 2007
On November 2, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in Ankara for what is certain to be one of her toughest missions. In addition to meeting her Turkish counterpart, Ali Babacan, Rice is expected to meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul as well as Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an effort to head off the growing danger of Turkish military action against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq. Ironically, the trip was hastily scheduled to precede Rice’s participation in an international conference in Istanbul on November 2-3 designed to promote stability in Iraq.
