Turkey Update: Erdogan Comes to Washington as Turkey Faces Pre-Election Tensions

    The stunning victory of the Justice and Development Party (JDP), led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the November 2002 parliamentary elections brought into office Turkey’s first single party government in over a decade and ushered in a period of much-needed political and economic stability. However, as Turkey moves towards the election of a new president in May 2007, and parliamentary elections, at the latest by November 2007, there is a perceptible increase of political tension and uncertainty. While Prime Minister Erdogan, who is meeting President George W. Bush at the White House on October 2, continues to exhibit supreme confidence and his party has a clear lead in opinion polls, his country may once again be heading into troubled waters.
