How socially inclusive is Latin America and what can be done to improve opportunities for marginalized communities? To explore these issues and more, the CSIS Americas Program is pleased to welcome Chris Sabatini and Alana Tummino of the Americas Quarterly as they present the 2013 results for the Social Inclusion Index. Now in its second year, the index measures access to public and private goods by race/ethnicity and by gender. It also includes 21 variables and ranks countries in the region. In addition, this year, AQ added three new variables--LGBT rights, women’s rights and financial inclusion—and compared levels of social inclusion with rates of violence. As a result of these changes, the latest edition saw Uruguay replacing Chile as the most inclusive country, though political, social, institutional, and economic challenges remain in all countries.
