Political and Economic Developments in Botswana

One of Africa’s most stable and prosperous countries, Botswana has a tradition of democracy and good governance, boasts one of the world’s fastest growth rates per capita, and delivers the most comprehensive social welfare system on the continent.  Its stability, however, rests on narrow foundations.  The economy is highly dependent on diamond revenues and the financial wellbeing of its southern neighbor, South Africa.  And in 2011, the largest social protests since independence severely tested the authority of the government.  One year after the release of its report, Botswana: Assessing Risks to Stability, part of a ten country survey ‘stress-testing’ African states, the CSIS Africa Program will host a session to discuss the study and provide updates on developments since its release.
