The CSIS Energy Program hosted IEA Deputy Executive Director Richard H. Jones and Chief Economist Fatih Birol to discuss the new World Energy Outlook (WEO 2008). In the new edition of the WEO the International Energy Agency (IEA) presented its view of key energy trends to 2030, giving particular attention to two pressing issues facing the sector today: future prospects for global oil and gas production and post-2012 climate scenarios. In this report, the IEA conducted a field-by-field analysis of production trends at 800 of the world’s largest oilfields, assessing the potential for finding and developing new reserves and a analyzing upstream costs and investment. The report also reviews two different climate scenarios and distills the implications for energy demand, investment, prices, air pollution, and energy security.
